The inmate who had escaped from Robinson Correctional Center has been taken back into custody.

Jared Carter had walked away from the prison Friday while on a grass cutting detail working on the prison grounds, but outside the prison walls.  He remained at large until being located Tuesday in Palestine.

Carter was stopped as he walking down a street by Palestine Police Chief Jeffrey Besing and other law enforcement personnel, who were following up on a tip received by the Illinois Department of Corrections.

Carter identified himself as the escapee.  When approached and asked to produce identification, he reportedly said, "I'm who you're looking for" and surrendered without incident.

Carter was being held at Crawford County Jail in Robinson at last report.
