Barn Fire Burns Bales, Not Building

Teutopolis firefighters handled a barn fire Thursday morning, but no damage was done to the barn itself.

Teutopolis Fire Chief Tim McMahon said firefighters were called at 5am to the Beckman Brothers Dairy Farm along 1600th Street, about three-quarters of a mile south of Illinois 33.  McMahon said wet hay in the barn caused spontaneous combustion.

The Beckmans were already up to do their milking so used equipment to get the bales out of the barn, so there was no damage to the building.  McMahon said about 35 bales were involved.

Firefighters were on scene about an hour.
