A pedestrian was fatally injured when struck by a vehicle late Saturday night at Mattoon.

State police report the pedestrian, a 22-year-old man from Benton, Wisconsin, was walking in the right lane of Illinois Route 16, just east of the interstate at 11:48pm when he was struck by a westbound car. The driver of the car, a 35-year-old man from Mattoon, was not injured and two female juvenile passengers also escaped injury.

After the pedestrian was struck, with his body coming to rest in the left lane, the body was struck by a SUV driven by 26-year-old Tia Coleman of Mascoutah. Coleman was cited for DUI.

Authorities say the pedestrian was fatally injured as a result of the first crash.

The westbound lanes of Route 16 were closed during the crash investigation, reopening at 5:47am Sunday.
