Mattoon Man Arrested for His Mother's Murder

A Mattoon man has been arrested for the murder of his mother.

Mattoon city police say 31-year-old Douglas R. Reed admitted to striking his mother several times in the head with a hammer in the early morning hours Friday.

Police were called just after 9am Friday to the 2900 block of Oak Avenue for an unresponsive individual. Police located a 60-year-old deceased female with blunt force trauma to her head. 

At 10:46am Friday, Reed was located in Moultrie County by Mattoon police. He was interviewed at Mattoon Police Department and admitted to striking his mother. He said he fled the area in his mother's vehicle.

Reed was processed for first degree murder and was transported to Coles County Safety and Detention Center.
