A vehicle struck a gas main in downtown Effingham Friday afternoon, resulting in a gas leak.

The vehicle pulled in behind the Brown's Drug Store building along the alley between 4th and 5th Streets, then jumped the parking block and struck the gas main. The release of gas resulted in a response by the Effingham Fire Department, along with Effingham Police Department and Rural Med EMS. Ameren crews were called to shut off the gas and to make repairs to the main.

No one was injured and no damage to the structure was apparent. Emergency crews were on scene for about 45 minutes.
