FedEx has announced that one of its Effingham shipping facilities will be closing later this year. This is not expected to have a significant impact on the large Freight Distribution Facility next to Interstates 57/70.
While the closure could involve several positions being eliminated, most, if not all affected employees are expected to be offered positions at other locations or severance.
The move is mainly seen as a business reorganization of its Ground and Express shipping divisions. No loss of service in this area is anticipated.
A date for the closure could not be given, but it is not expected to happen for at least several months, as employee options including retraining will take some time.
Two other locations in Central Illinois, those in Urbana and Springfield, will similarly be closing this year.
As more information about this closure is released, such as the facility address, date, and number of people affected, this story will be updated.
