(DENNIS WHITE)

Mattoon police have arrested a man suspected of a hit and run over the weekend involving two pedestrians.

44-year-old Dennis J. White of Mattoon was arrested on counts of attempted first degree murder, aggravated battery with great bodily harm, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, leaving the scene of an accident with injuries, and reckless conduct. White was arrested Monday morning at the Mattoon Police Department. He has not yet been formally charged.

One of the hit-and-run victims is reportedly White's ex-wife, who identified White as the suspect.

The incident occurred just before 3pm Saturday in the Mattoon Walmart parking lot. Police have learned that a white-colored truck struck two individuals and fled the scene. Police found the injured pedestrians, who were transported to Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center for treatment.

After speaking to witnesses and observing surveillance video it was determined that White accelerated and turned his truck into the victims while they were walking in the parking lot. One victim was treated at the hospital and released, while the other remained hospitalized.
