Local Man Charged w/Attempted Burglary

A local man has been charged in connection with a burglary attempt over the weekend.

40-year-old Derrick Morrell of Effingham is accused of attempting to enter an apartment in the 1600 block of Hillside Drive about 6pm Saturday. Morrell is accused of trying to force entry into the unit. 

Effingham Police Chief Jason McFarland said when Morrell attempted to flee on foot, a drone provided by the Effingham County Sheriff's Office was utilized to locate him, and that led to his arrest.

Morrell has been charged with attempted residential burglary, as well as possession of burglary tools, and criminal damage to property...that being the door of the apartment unit. 

Morrell is next due in court on February 19.
