Ban on Assault Weapons in Illinois Remains in Effect for Now

Illinois’ ban on assault weapons and large capacity magazines will remain in force, at least for the time being.

Capitol News Illinois reports an order from a federal judge in East St. Louis blocking enforcement of the law was scheduled to take effect this past weekend. But the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals on Thursday put a hold on that order so it can hear a full appeal of the case.

At least two other challenges to the law are pending before federal district court judges in Chicago.

Illinois lawmakers passed the assault weapons ban in 2023 following a mass shooting the previous summer at a Fourth of July parade in Highland Park.
