Education officials from across Illinois are pushing for changes in the way students are tested each year and how schools are held accountable for meeting state standards.

Capitol News Illinois reports those officials say the current testing system fails to give an accurate picture of how well students and their schools are actually doing.

In a report entitled Vision 20-30, the officials say the state should adopt new tests that measure both how well students are doing now and how much they grow academically over time.

The report comes from groups representing superintendents, school boards, principals, district business officers, and regional superintendents.

States are required under federal law to test students each year in English language arts and math.
