Fayette County voters will decide whether to allow a sales tax increase to help pay for a new courthouse.

The Fayette County board voted Tuesday to place the increase on the April 2025 ballot. The increase would not cover the entire cost of the project.

Voters will decide whether to approve a 1% sales tax increase for 35 years.

The proposed new courthouse and county jail would be a 62,000 square foot facility with the ability to house 100 prisoners and would cost just under $47 million. The facility would most likely be constructed in Vandalia.
