Tuesday is Election Day.

The big item for most is the presidential contest between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Kamala Harris.

Another big item in Effingham County is the 1% sales tax. If approved, a 1% sales tax will be imposed to help finance school facilities, school resource officers, and mental health professionals. A Yes vote means that you're in favor of the tax's imposition. Nothing not subject to sales taxes currently will be subject to the increase.

There are a few advisory referenda. Three are statewide questions. Those are at the front of the ballot and deal with penalties for anyone interfering with election worker's official duties, a 3% tax on income greater than $1 million, and whether reproductive treatments should be covered by any health insurance plan. Again, those are only advisory referenda.

There is a contested race for the 12th District Congress between Republican incumbent Mike Bost and Democrat challenger Brian Roberts. There's also a vote on whether Judge Amanda Ade-Harlow should be retained as a judge. There are a number of offices to be filled where there is only one candidate.

Also on the ballot is a local advisory referendum on whether tax-based funding should be allocated and spent to support illegal migrants in the county.

The polls will be open from 6am to 7pm Tuesday. We will have periodic updates on 979XFM and on the websites for both stations.
