A man reportedly committing a home invasion near Herrick early Friday morning was fatally wounded by a person in the residence.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office reports that the suspect was 19-year-old Wade M. Barnes of Cowden. The sheriff's office indicated that Barnes was known by them due to prior incidents, including a current criminal case.

During the break-in to the residence about 5:25am, Barnes was threatening the occupants. An occupant armed themselves and issued verbal warnings for Barnes to stop. Police say Barnes continued into the residence, ignoring the warning. Shots were fired in Barnes' direction, striking Barnes.

EMS was dispatched and transported Barnes to Good Shepherd Hospital in Shelbyville where he was pronounced dead at 7:16am.

The Shelby County Sheriff's Office is continuing an investigation into the incident, assisted by the Illinois State Police, Shelby County Coroner's Office, and the Shelby County State's Attorney's Office.
