While Effingham County school districts are hoping residents will pass the one-cent school facilties tax in November, Clay County schools are looking at a similar vote in the April 2025 election.

North Clay Superintendent Keith Price shared information with his board at this week's meeting. Price noted that the two other county schools, Clay City and Flora, would be considering adopting the same resolution. He said when the school district with a majority of the student population in the county adopts the resolution, this is what would trigger placing the item on the April ballot. Since North Clay and Clay City school districts combined make up about 38% of the county student population, it is the Flora district's approval of the matter that would put it on the April ballot.

The Board voted 5-0 to place the item on the April agenda, understanding that the Flora district would also have to put the question on the ballot.

Meanwhile, the Board heard from Bryan West, who has resigned as North Clay's Transportation Director. West wanted to thank those with whom he has worked. West has been hired as Transportation Director for the Effingham Unit 40 school district.

The Board agreed to apply for the annual $50,000 state maintenance grant, with the proceeds being applied to the current addition and renovation project. The District has to match the amount of the grant. Officials toured the project prior to the meeting. Principals Ben Borries and Sarah Newby presented their building report cards from the State.

In personnel matters, the North Clay board accepted the resignation of Kim Teague as junior high Scholar Bowl coach, accepted the resignation of Mike Owens as junior high head baseball coach and as 7th grade boys basketball coach, and accepted Laith Harrington's resignation as full time custodian.
