Effingham City Council members Friday voted to approve the seeking of $3 million in State grant funds.

The money will be paired with $750,000 in local funds for a westerly extension of Airport Road. The project will include street, water and sewer construction.

The funds are being sought from a Capital Ready grant through the Illinois Regional Site Readiness Program.

Typically, grant requests are accompanied by a promise of how many jobs the project will retain or create. This program, though, has no such requirement.

The City has a large portion of property west of US Route 45 and this project would open the property up to development.
