Already having served as the long-time Coroner in Fayette County, Bruce Bowen has announced his candidacy for the Republican nomination as Fayette County Sheriff in 2014.

Bowen was elected coroner in 2000, and said he has more than 1,200 death investigations under his belt.  He also notes he has worked with a variety of other agencies and as a department head has managed a county office budget while working on budgetary matters with the Fayette County Board.

Bowen said he's running for sheriff because he is "concerned about public safety and safeguarding our constitutional guarantees.  The Department needs a leader that will commit 24 hours a day, 365 days a year" as he says he has as coroner.  Bowen discussed success in seeking grants for his office, which he said would help save county taxpayers money.  He also said as coroner he has the same powers and duties as the sheriff.

Bowen said he's concerned about what he termed "an upswing in both violent and drug/alcohol related deaths in Fayette County" and said strong leadership is needed now more than ever.
