The second early morning fire in as many days occurred today in Mattoon.

Mattoon firefighters were called at 2:54am to a structure fire in the 3500 block of Willow Drive. Crews arrived at a single-storty single family residence at 3am. Crews found smoke and flames coming from the front of the residence with fire extending into the attic.

Neighbors told firefighters that the home's occupant was able to escape from her bedroom through a window. The woman was the only person in the home.

The fire was quickly knocked down within 15 minutes. The home received smoke damage throughout the structure, with fire and water damage to the bedroom and office, bathroom and spare bedroom. The home is considered uninhabitable for now. The person displaced due to the fire is receiving assistance from the Red Cross.

Mattoon firefighters remind to sleep with your bedroom door closed and maintain working smoke and CO detectors. With the bedroom door being closed at the incident, there was enough time for the resident to escape uninjured.

The fire appears to have been accidental in nature. No one was injured.

All fire units cleared the scene at 5:12am.
