Doug McCain from Effingham County was recently honored by Illinois 4-H for what was termed his "selfless dedication" to the University of Illinois Extension 4-H youth development program.

In 2024, 70 individuals were inducted into the Illinois 4-H Hall of Fame. Illinois 4-H honors and celebrates extraordinary 4-H alumni, volunteers, and former 4-H staff. Those inducted have a track record of exemplary service to 4-H or outstanding career and community achievement and were nominated by county University of Illinois Extension staff. Each inductee receives a commemorative Hall of Fame medallion at the Illinois State Fair 4-H Alumni & Volunteer Celebration events.

McCain was nominated to be inducted into the 4-H Hall of Fame at the 2024 Illinois State Fair. 4-H officials said, "Doug’s dedication to education and empowering our youth has made a lasting impact on our 4-H families".

4-H officials add, "For years, Doug has been a supporter, always going above and beyond to ensure that young people have the tools and knowledge they need to succeed. His passion for education and his commitment to fostering the next generation of leaders have made him an invaluable part of our 4-H community.

"Doug has dedicated much of his life to serving Effingham County through his volunteer work with the Effingham County 4-H program including as a 4-H leader for 25 years of leadership of the Little Wabash Whirlwinds. He has been an active member of the Effingham County Board, Pork Producers, and various other county organizations. He was instrumental in organizing the 4-H BBQ, raising crucial funds and drawing crowds with his famous BBQ sauce. Doug's tireless dedication and support have significantly impacted the community, helping to educate citizens about the value of 4-H and nurturing a new generation of confident, skilled young leaders.

"This recognition reflects Doug’s hard work, dedication, and love for 4-H. We are proud to celebrate his achievements and look forward to the continued positive impact he will have on our 4-H community for years to come. Congratulations, Doug McCain, on this well-deserved honor!"

Illinois 4-H programs in Effingham County reach youth each year through 4-H clubs, camps, educational programs, workshops, and conferences held in communities, schools, parks, and homes.

Volunteers fill key leadership and mentoring roles throughout the state. “Volunteers are the heart of the Illinois 4-H Youth Development program, embodying the spirit of dedicated service that nurtures the growth of our future leaders,” says Patricia McGlaughlin, University of Illinois Extension specialist. “Their unwavering commitment and selfless contributions empower our youth to learn, thrive, and make a positive impact on their communities. Volunteers help youth find their spark and help build our next generations.”
