A person is in custody after an armed robbery occurred Wednesday afternoon at the Effingham Walgreen store.

Effingham City Police Lieutenant Aaron Lange said the incident occurred about 5:55pm. After obtaining an undetermined amount of money, the suspect fled west on Fayette Avenue to Outer Belt West and headed south. Lange said the suspect attempted to turn from Outer Belt to Route 40, but failed to make the turn onto the highway and traveled into the ditch.

The suspect, who is believed to have been operating on his own, was taken into custody at the location. No injuries were reported in the incident.

Effingham City Police were assisted by the Effingham County Sheriff's Office.

Effingham resident Hadley R. Majors was taken into custody by Effingham City Police Wednesday evening on the armed robbery charge, as well as counts of possession of a controlled substance, fleeing or attempting to elude a police officer, and aggravated battery. The 36-year-old Majors was in custody as of today.

Majors is related to an employee of the Effingham County State's Attorney's Office. Due to that, State's Attorney Aaron Jones asked that the Fayette County State's Attorney's Office be appointed to prosecute the case. It is expected that charges will be formally filed either today or Friday.
