A man found guilty in Cumberland County of endangering the life of a child is serving his sentence more than two years following the infant's death.
The Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation was requested by Greenup police to conduct a death investigation in Greenup. On February 11, 2022, the infant, a 15-month-old boy, was located in the 900 block of Cumberland in Greenup.
The investigation led to the arrest of 32-year-old Alexander Garrard. However, Cumberland County State's Attorney Bryan Robbins said an autopsy of the child did not support the theory that the child's death was a homicide. That resulted in Garrard being charged with endangering the life of a child, which is a misdemeanor punishable by up to a year in jail.
Garrard went to trial in October of 2023 and was found guilty. However, he failed to appear for his sentencing hearing in November. Garrard was later taken into custody on a warrant in Crawford County in December, and was sentenced to jail time in February. He is completing his sentence in Cumberland County Jail in Toledo.
