Five people were injured in a crash Friday afternoon at Montrose.

The Effingham County Sheriff's Office said the crash occurred at 2:29pm on North Spring Creek Road at East National Road in Montrose.

The driver of the car, 39-year-old Garrett Moreland of Breda, Iowa, told deputies that he fell asleep and when he woke up, there was a vehicle stopped at the intersection in front of him. Moreland swerved off the roadway to the right to avoid the stopped vehicle. Moreland's vehicle skidded on gravel and struck a utility pole on the east side of the roadway.

Moreland was injured, as were his four passengers, 36-year-old Elizabeth Moreland of Breda, Iowa, and a 15-year-old boy, a 12-year-old boy, and a nine-year-old, all also from Breda, Iowa. All five people were taken to HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham for treatment.

Garrett Moreland was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.
