Effingham County Board members rejected the only bid received to replace the gazebo on the Effingham Courthouse Museum lawn downtown.

The rejection was due to the amount of the bid received. The bid came in at $494,026, which is considerably above the estimated cost.

The Board also voted to republish the requests for proposals on the project in hopes of getting a bid closer to the estimate.

County Board members also voted to place a question on the November election ballot. The measure would ask that tax dollars not be spent, other than in emergencies, on illegal immigrants. It is an advisory referendum, not binding.

Board member Norbert Soltwedel spoke against the proposal, which was brought to the Board by two local residents. The measure passed on a voice vote, with Soltwedel voting against the proposal.

We reported in a separate story on the appointment of Mike Buzzard as the Board representative from District F, replacing Elizabeth Huston, who resigned from the Board.
