State Rep. Adam Niemerg (R-Dieterich) is reminding everyone about his FREE fishing derby for kids ages 4 to 15 this Saturday, July 20, beginning at 8:30 a.m. The event will take place at Sam Parr State Fish and Wildlife Area at the White Oak Shelter along Illinois Route 33 near Newton.

Kids must be accompanied by a parent or adult with prizes for “Biggest Fish” and “Most Fish” caught.

“This is a great opportunity for young people to get away from video games, cell phones, and the television to get some fresh air and have some fun learning about a sport they can enjoy for a lifetime,” said Rep. Niemerg. “We will have bait for the kids with Newton High School Fishing Team members available to help teach kids how to bait a hook and reel in a fish.”

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) with have staff on hand to talk about water safety and provide information to kids and families.
