The continuing saga of Wurl Lane was revisited Monday by the Altamont City Council.
Motorists were driving on areas other than the roadway, so the Council closed the roadway with a barrier in the middle of the roadway. However, people kept using the roadway. Resident Becky Turner said people are driving in her yard to gain access to the area.
City Commissioner Tayler Polk told Turner that he would have an item on the next Council agenda to reopen the street as a one-lane roadway.
There was also action scheduled on the sale of 107 North Main Street, but with the Council down a member due to former mayor Dan Milleville's resignation, Polk recusing himself from the discussion as his brother is a potential purchaser, and Commissioner Terry White being absent due to a family funeral, the matter had to be tabled.
The Council heard from local resident Stan Mehl regarding drainage, streets and culverts on Lucky Drive, and voted to allow the Effingham County Fair Parade on July 28. Also approved was a payment to R&H Plumbing and Heating for the I-70 overpass water main replacement, with the overpass eventually being closed, approved a change order on a sanitary sewer replacement project, approved the final payment to Kieffer Brothers Construction for the sanitary sewer replacement, and awarded street oiling for the year to Larry Heuerman Trucking for $56,724.
Altamont Council members approved a one-month extension of the garbage contract with DBS Sanitation from the end of June to the end of July so a new contract can be finalized. The Council also granted a 5% pay increase for City employees.
