(CHERI MARTEN)

Retiring Unit 40 educator and administrator Cheri Marten said she was inspired to pursue a career in education by teachers who taught her as a child.

Marten is retiring after 30 years in education, including the last several years as principal of South Side School. Our Greg Sapp talked with her about her career and about education in general. Here's that conversation...

Marten will be succeeded as principal by Jessica Reeder. The two worked together this past year, and Marten said she and Reeder worked together well. She thinks Reeder and incoming Dean of Students Talitha Wiedman should be a great fit at South Side.

Marten capped off her career by being honored with the Award of Special Recognition from the Illinois State Board of Education! She was recognized for having shaped her school community for the better. She started her educational journey at Beecher City Schools in 1989 and made the Early Learning Center her home from 1995 to 2013. Since then she has been the Administrator at South Side School.
