Shumway Man Dies After Being Found Unresponsive

An area man died Saturday after being found unresponsive at a residence in Shumway.
54-year-old James Paul Mitchell of Shumway died shortly after his arrival in the emergency room of HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital in Effingham. The Effingham County Sheriff's Office, Shumway Fire Department and Rural Med EMS were called to the residnce at 11:47am.
Mitchell was a former Mattoon resident.
The Effingham County Coroner's Office was notified and responded to the Emergency Room. Preliminary investigation indicated Mitchell's death appears to be due to natural causes due to what the Coroner's Office termed numerous medical issues, but toxicology samples were taken to help determine the official cause of death.
Next of kin were notified and medical records were obtained by the Coroner's Office. The office is continuing an investigation into the death.
