The Student Council at Cumberland High School has received the state's highest honor.

The Cumberland organization earned the Gold Status Honor Council Book at the Illinois Association of Student Councils Convention.

Cumberland school board members also learned at this month's meeting that 40 individuals have applied for shoes for the coming school year. The Shoe Tree program has been offered in the Cumberland district for many years. The shoes will be distributed during Meet the Teacher Night and on the first day of the coming school year.

The Cumberland board approved the fee schedule for the coming school year, and approved the Neal Center YMCA transportation request for the 2024 YMCA summer program field trips. The Neal Center will reimburse the school district 100% of the fuel cost and driver salary.

The Board purchased a used scissor lift from Bahrns Equipment in Effingham, and accepted resignations from middle school teacher Jamie Princko, high school assistant basketball coach Brandon Shaon, and Rachel Flach. The Board employed Chelsea Cox as assistant middle school girls basketball coach, Dori Martelli as high school head volleyball coach, and Wayne Bloemer as a middle school teacher. Also approved was Doug Jones' request to transfer to an open 4th grade teaching position.
