Drowning in Lake Shelbyville

A man drowned as the result of a boating accident on Lake Shelbyville Sunday afternoon.

Shelby County Coroner Brad Phegley said a Knox County man, 32-year-old Tanner D. Alvarado, was alone in a boat near the 9th Street Beach and Boat Ramp when the incident occurred about 1pm. Phegley said the water was choppy and it's believed the boat hit a wave, throwing Alvarado into the water. The boat continued operating on the lake until it could be recovered and shut down.

The Effingham County Dive Rescue Team was called by the Shelby County Dive Team to the scene and were in the water from 2:30pm until recovering the body. Dive Team Commander Terry Trueblood said the Effingham County divers were in the water while the Shelby County team members operated sonar to aid in locating Alvarado.
