Law Day 2024 Set for Thursday

Law Day 2024 is set for this Thursday. The event is sponsored nationally each year by the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks, and Effingham Elks Lodge #1016 sponsors the local observance.

Students from Teutopolis, Altamont, and Dieterich High Schools have been invited to attend the Effingham County Law Day event. Things will kick off at the Effingham County Government Center with an introduction and welcome from Judge Jeff DeLong. Students will then be guided on a tour of the tunnel from the Government Center to the County Building, tour of the county jail, and provided the opportunity to attend a fire arms & safety class combined with range practical alongside Sheriff Kuhns and the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office. After lunch the students will participate in job shadowing with various county officials allowing them the opportunity to deep dive into government workings in Effingham County. Lunch will be hosted by Effingham Elks Lodge 1016 located at 2102 South Banker Street in Effingham.

Participating students from Teutopolis High School are Anthony Roley, Isaac McWhorter, Alli Huffman, Derek Schmidt, Cole Breer, and Josh Habing.

Participating students from Altamont Community High School are Daylan Rosales, Nathan Stuemke, Braden McBride, Riley Berg, and Braden Magelitz.

Participating students from Dieterich High School are Hunter Bannick, Braden Hahn, Jeff Faught, Wyatt Fuesting, Javier Lemus, and Eli Hall.

The Effingham County Board would like to thank Teutopolis, Altamont, and Dieterich High Schools, Effingham Elks Lodge 1016, and all county employees and officials for helping support the Effingham County 2024 Law Day.

Effingham and St. Anthony High Schools will take over city offices for the day on Thursday.

Here's the schedule:

8:30 A.M. Meet & Greet will take place in the City Council Chambers at City Hall. City Staff Introductions will be handled by City Administrator Steve Miller. Student introductions and assignments will follow.

8:45 A.M. Tours – (Police Station, Waste Water Treatment Plant, Fire Station, Water Treatment Plant)

12:00 P.M. Luncheon & Speaker Elks Club, 2102 S. Banker Street

1:00 P.M. Briefing for Mock Council Meeting

1:30 P.M. Mock Council Meeting

2:45 P.M. Dismissal
