Illinois State Police have released additional information on the three-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon that resulted in one death and critical injuries to another person.

The crash occurred shortly after 4pm at the intersection of Moccasin Road and Lake Sara Road. A truck was traveling east on Moccasin Road, approaching a car stopped behind a truck at the intersection. Police report the driver of the truck, a 40-year-old man from Mason, failed to reduce speed and struck the rear of the car, driven by a 28-year-old man from Beecher City, forcing the car into the rear of the stopped truck, driven by a 77-year-old man from Effingham.

The man driving the truck that struck the stopped car was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid the crash.

The passenger in the car was prononced dead at the scene of the crash by Effingham County Coroner Kim Rhodes. The person fatally injured was an eight-month-old boy, according to Coroner Rhodes. The driver of the car was airlifted to Carle Hospital in Urbana for treatment of severe injuries.

The driver of the truck that struck the car refused medical treatment on scene. The driver of the stopped truck reported no injuries at the scene. A passenger in the stopped truck, a 70-year-old female from Effingham, was transported by ambulance for treatment of what were termed minor injuries.

State police did not release the names of any of those involved in the collision.
