Fire did major damage to a home in Mattoon Sunday afternoon.

Mattoon firefighters were dispatched to the 700 block of Prairie Avenue at 2:16pm. The initial information was of a fire on the front porch of the residence. When firefighters reached the scene, the porch was well involved with extension of the fire into the attic space of the home.

Firefighters learned that the house was occupied and assisted the two occupants and three dogs safely out the back door of the structure.

The high winds Sunday quickly spread the fire to the attic space of the house.

Crews were able to get the fire under control in about 30 minutes. There was extensive fire damage to the front porch and front room of the residence, while there was smoke and water damage throughout the structure.

The occupants were evaluated by EMS on scene, but were not transported to the hospital. No injuries were reported to firefighters.

The cause of the fire is still being determined. Matton Fire Chief Jeff Hilligoss said the house is considered uninhabitable until repairs can be made.

Fire crews began clearing the scene about 4:30pm. The American Red Cross was contacted to assist the occupants of the home.

Mattoon firefighters were assisted by Coles/Moultrie 911, Mattoon Police Department, Charleston Fire Department, Mitchell-Jerdan Ambulance, and Ameren Gas and Electric.
