Today is the 75th anniversary of the fire that destroyed St. Anthony Hospital in Effingham, resulting in the deaths of some 75 people.

The fire also led to a number of technological changes to make hospitals worldwide more safe.

Donations from people across the globe were received that helped pay for HSHS St. Anthony's Memorial Hospital.

A special ceremony is scheduled for 2pm on Sunday, April 14 at the hospital to dedicate a statue of a nurse holding a baby, symbolic of the sacrifices made by many hospital nurses and other employees the night of the fire.
