A man attempting to elude police outside Vandalia Monday morning died in a body of water while fleeing.
The man's name has not been released pending notification of next-of-kin.
Vandalia Police Department conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 70 near the eastbound 64 milemarker at 4:43am. During the course of the traffic stop, it was indicated that a male occupant of the vehicle had an outstanding warrant for his arrest through the Arizona Department of Corrections for a parole violation. The male subject fled officers on foot and went south where he went into a body of water. The suspect continued swimming away from the officers and eventually went under the water and did not resurface.
Officers requested the Fayette County EMA dive team who arrived on scene and attempted to locate the subject. They were assisted by the Effingham County Dive Rescue Team, Keyesport Fire Department Dive Team and Department of Natural Resources Conservation officers. The Fayette County Sheriff's Office also assisted in the investigation. The male subject's body was recovered from the body of water.
Illinois State Police Crime Scene, Illinois State Police Investigations Zone 8 and the Fayette County Coroner's Office took over the investigation.
