State Jobless Rate for January Slightly Lower Than One Month Earlier; Up from One Year Earlier

The Illinois unemployment rate for January was 4.7%, slightly lower than the 4.8% rate for December.

Nonfarm payrolls in the state increased by 1,700 from December to January.

In January, the industry sectors with the largest over the month job gains were Government; Educational and Health Services; and Trade, Transportation and Utilities. The industry sectors with the largest job declines included Professional and Business Services; Construction; and Leisure and Hospitality.

The state's unemployment rate was 1% higher than the national unemployment rate for January. The national unemployment rate was 3.7%.

The state jobless rate for January was up from 4.4% in January 2023.
