Effingham Public Library board members discussed the status of their Case Managers at this month's meeting.

The case managers are headquartered in the lower level of the library, and provide a variety of services at no cost to those in need of assistance. The service has been provided since June 2020. Some people are assisted with getting IDs necessary to get a job; others are assisted in applying for Medicaid; there are a variety of services provided.

Library Director Amanda McKay said the case managers typically work 24 hours a week. McKay said 5,800 clients have been helped since the service began. Their work is funded through donations and grants, but McKay said the funds are running low. The current funding will expire in mid-April. Anyone wishing information as to how they could contribute to the program is encouraged to contact McKay at the library at 217-342-2464, extension 8.

The library board also approved a change to the library's weather and closing policy. Under the policy, if Unit 40 schools are closed due to inclement weather, the library director can make a decision on closing the library without consulting the library board president.

The Board also reviewed the members whose terms end in April. They are Matt Grieder, Shelby Dasenbrock and Rod Wiethop. The Mayor appoints board members with the consent of the City Council.

Board members also approved the budget and plan of service for the coming fiscal year.
