A Sigel man was killed when his car was struck by an Amtrak passenger train Wednesday night.

The person killed was identified as 38-year-old Joseph Garrett.

Shelby County Coroner Brad Phegley said the crash occurred at 6:10pm along US Route 45 between Neoga and Sigel. Phegley said Garrett's eastbound car was on the private road leading to a power substation and drove into the path of the northbound train. The train came to a stop several hundred feet north of the point of impact. Phegley pronounced Garrett dead at the scene. Garrett was alone in the car.

Phegley said no one on the train was injured. He said the train was traveling at 79MPH at the time of impact.

Emergency crews were still on scene late Wednesday night.
