Congressional candidate Darren Bailey was joined by St. Rep. Blaine Wilhour Monday for a press conference at Eagle Pass, Texas, pressing for a closing of the US/Mexico border.
Bailey, who farms in Clay County, is seeking the Republican nomination for Congress from the 12th District. Republican Mike Bost of Murphysboro is the current congressman.
Bailey, a former state senator and Republican nominee for governor, said it's time for action to stop the flow of illegal immigrants across the border. He asked for four steps: finish the border wall, enforce existing immigration laws, dismantle incentives for illegal entry, and designating drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
Wilhour focused his remarks on actions by Governor J.B. Pritzker to declare Illinois a "sanctuary state" and suggestions by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson to start building shelters for illegal immigrants in other parts of the state besides Chicago.
Wilhour said he wants local governments to declare that no local tax dollars will be used to care for illegal immigrants.
Matthew Hall of Vandalia is running against Wilhour for the Republican nomination for 110th District state representative.
