Altamont city council members have approved a modified setback for property along Main Street, but decided against allowing outside auctions in that area.

The requests were made by Terry White, who is an Altamont city commissioner.

The modified setback was for properties at 4 and 6 South Main, allowing the placement of Conex containers between the two buildings at those locations. The containers will hold inventory for White's auction business. He plans to build a roof over the two containers.

The second request was to allow White to hold outside auctions, in an addition to the online auctions he typically conducts. The Altamont Zoning Board had recommended that the Council grant permission to hold outside auctions on a limited basis, but a Council motion to allow the outside auctions died for lack of a second.

The Altamont council also authorized the sale of a truck and a squad car as surplus equipment. Schmid Auction will handle the sale of the vehicles.
