Local resident Barry McGee has been placed on probation and given jail time after pleading guilty to residential arson.

The 61-year-old McGee was charged following a fire in a modular home on Effingham's northwest side last April. When fire crews arrived, they found smoke coming from the residence and an occupant sitting outside, saying another person was still inside. That other person, however, had managed to exit the structure on their own.

Firefighters found a chair burning, as well as some clothing hanging on the chair.

McGee was originally found unfit to stand trial, but was returned to fitness several months later.

McGee was originally charged with a Class X felony count of aggravated arson, knowing others were present inside the home. That count was dismissed as part of the negotiated plea to conclude the case.

McGee was placed on four years' probation and given 180 days in jail. He was also fined.
