Two local legislators seeking re-election in 2024 have had their nominating petitions challenged.

State Representatives Blaine Wilhour and Adam Niemerg are the officeholders whose petitions are being contested.

In Wilhour's case, the objection is that Wilhour didn't submit a copy of his Statement of Economic Interest with the Illinois Secretary of State's Office.

In the case of Niemerg, his statement of candidacy was not notarized.

Different recommendations on the challenges will be considered when the Illinois State Board of Elections meets on Thursday in Springfield. In Niemerg's case, the hearing officer and legal counsel are both recommending that he be kept off the ballot.

In Wilhour's case, the recommendation of the hearing officer is that the objections be overruled and that he appear on the ballot.

The objections were filed by residents of the districts in which the legislators serve.

Matt Diederich, a State Board of Elections spokesman, said that, even if the Board rules either or both of the candidates off the ballot, the candidates can still take the matter to court.
