There's more information available on the house fire that was part of a shooting incident Saturday night in Fayette County.

The fire occurred around 7pm in an area southwest of Brownstown. Brownstown Fire Protection District Chief Bruce Dush said the homeowner, retired school teacher Sandra Stine, arrived home and encountered a man reportedly attempting to commit a burglary. The suspect, 36-year-old Tyler Roe of Brownstown, reportedly took a vehicle from the Stine residence and fled the scene. Shots were reportedly fired at the scene. Stine was not injured.

Dush said the fire started on the back porch next to the utility room of the home. There are reports that the fire was set. Dush said officials from the Illinois State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating the fire.

Dush said fire crews from Brownstown were assisted by St. Elmo firefighters, as the two departments have an auto-aid agreement. He said firefighters were able to save a portion of the ranch-style home. Fire crews cleared the scene between 12:30am and 1am Sunday.

Meanwhile, Fayette County sheriff's deputies and Farina police were able to stop the stolen vehicle in an area between St. Mary's Catholic Church and the gas plant north of St. Elmo. As officers approached the vehicle, a Farina police officer discharged his weapon, wounding Roe who was taken to an area hospital for treatment. Roe was later released from the hospital and booked at Fayette County Jail.

During a court appearance Tuesday in Fayette County Circuit Court, Roe was charged with Class X felony counts of home invasion and aggravated arson. The Class X offenses mean mandatory prison time if convictions result. Roe was also charged with felony counts of residential burglary and theft.

Judge Allan Lolie also ruled that Roe should remain in custody. He will make his next court appearance on January 23.
