Union Cemetery in Altamont, an official Wreaths Across America location, will host a wreath-laying ceremony, joining more than 3,700 other locations across the country for National Wreaths Across America Day.

Coordinated and led by local volunteers, the placement of the veterans' wreaths on the headstones of fallen service members laid to rest there. The annual event is designed to further the mission to Remember, Honor and Teach, with a goal of ensuring that the memory of those who served our country endures.

The ceremony is scheduled for Saturday morning, December 16, beginning at 11am at Union Cemetery, located on the Altamont blacktop at the north edge of Altamont. Members of Altamont American Legion Post #512, veterans, active duty, their families and the general public are invited to attend the ceremony.

Wreaths Across America is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded to continue and expand the annual wreath-laying ceremony at Arlington National Cemetery begun by Maine businessman Morrill Worcester in 1992. The organization's yearlong mission to Remember, Honor and Teach, is carried out in part each year by coordinating wreath-laying ceremonies in December at Arlington, as well as at more than 3,700 veterans' cemeteries and other locations in all 50 states and overseas.
