Local Resident Arrested on Burglary Charges

A local man was arrested on burglary charges early Wednesday morning.

Effingham City Police arrested 27-year-old John N. VanPelt about 3am. Police Chief Jason McFarland said the owner of a recently-vacated house in the 1000 block of North 4th Street had asked for additional patrols of the property. An officer on patrol spotted someone crouching outside the residence and took VanPelt into custody.

VanPelt was arrested on two counts of burglary, along with counts of possession of burglary tools, obstructing a peace officer, and criminal trepass to property. He was later released on a pre-trial notice to appear in court.
