The Illinois Department of Natural Resources has awarded $200,000 to TREC (Trail Recreation Effingham County) to expand the local network of trails.

The funds would be used on Phase VI-C of the trail network. TREC Board Chairman Frank Brummer said the work involves "more trails in the nature park. It is a matching grant; if the community puts up $50,000, we will get $200,000 from the State of Illinois. A $1,000 gift builds $5,000 of trails. A $5,000 gift builds $25,000 of trails. We have to raise $50,000, then we build the trail."

IDNR is awarding more than $3.7 million for projects in 19 Illinois communities.
