The Effingham Zoning Board of Appeals voted Tuesday to deny a petition for a variance for a solar energy system.

Donato Solar Incorporated petitioned for the variance for a system with a surface area larger than 50,000 square feet but less than 100,000 square feet on a parcel larger than five acres.

The petitioner contended that the variance would allow full use of the land at 1208 North Wenthe Drive and greater renewable energy return.

Members of the Board of Appeals voted 5-0 to deny the request, feeling that a hardship was not found that would warrant granting the variance.
