Effingham city council members Tuesday discussed the fiscal year tax levy.

Council members agreed on a rate lower for the second year in a row. The amount of revenue generated by the levy is still expected to increase. That's because the equalized assessed value of property in the city limits increased. The levy is based on an EAV of $399,672,121.

The levy should be passed at a future Council meeting.

The Council purchased just more than four acres of land at the intersection of Avenue of Mid America and Outer Belt West. The land is currently improved with a parking lot.

The purchase of 25 acres of property along Schwerman Street as a site of the Effingham Showcase Center was not acted upon and was not discussed at the meeting. The Showcase Center has been much discussed as a multi-sport facility.

The Council decided to abate the levied amounts for bond payments on various projects, since enough interest has been generated to make the bond payments.

City Economic Development Director Todd Hull reported on a residential rehabilitation program that will help pay for exterior improvements to houses similar to improvements to commercial buildings.

Hull also reported that the State approved the proposed expansion of the City-County Enterprise Zone.

There were also updates from City Tourism Director Jodi Thoele on a variety of upcoming holiday events.
