The Effingham man reported by local residents for walking near a local intersection while carrying an air rifle in September has been formally charged.

The Effingham County State's Attorney's office Monday filed charges of possession of methamphetamine and criminal trespass to a vehicle against 50-year-old Jeffry Pinkerton. Effingham City Police Chief Jason McFarland said at the time of the apprehension that it was not illegal for Pinkerton to be carrying the weapon, but indicated other alleged actions by Pinkerton at the time of the incident led to his arrest.

Pinkerton had been spotted about 11am on September 21 walking near the intersection of National Avenue and 5th Street while in possession of the air rifle. City police took Pinkerton into custody less than 15 minutes after they were notified of the incident. City police were assisted by members of the Effingham County Sheriff's Office and the Illinois State Police.

The intersection where Pinkerton was spotted is within a few blocks of South Side School. Authorities contacted Unit 40 officials at the time about the incident.

Pinkerton is to make his initial appearance on the charges on November 27.
