The Illinois High School Rodeo Association State Finals got underway Wednesday with a kickoff celebration in downtown Effingham.

Stan Bahrns of Bahrns Equipment served as Parade Marshal.

The procession also featured this weekend's rodeo competitors seated aboard a flatbed trailer.

Kickoff highlights also included a cookout sponsored by Martin's IGA+ with proceeds going to the IHSRA Scholarship Fund, music, and a shootout involving cowboy reenactors from the area.

The scene shifts now to the Effingham County Fairgrounds at Altamont for the rodeo competitions, set for 7pm tonight and Friday, and at noon and 6pm Saturday.

The Mutton Bustin' contest for kids will not be offered this year due to a lack of sheep.  However, there are other kids events scheduled.  There will also be another Alumni Bull Ride as a part of Friday night and Saturday night activities where 10 former Illinois high school bull riding contestants will vie for a $500 jackpot and a weekend buckle.
