Effingham resident Jasmine A. Meyer was sentenced Tuesday to three years in prison on a charge of aggravated cruelty.

The 21-year-old Meyer was arrested in February after an investigation was conducted related to a video circulating on social media outlets. Based upon the contents of the video and the ensuing investigation, Meyer was arrested and charged with intentionally burning and causing the death of a guinea pig.

In August, Meyer pled guilty.

Meyer Tuesday was also sentenced by Judge Marc Kelly to concurrent three-year prison terms for attempted aggravated battery to a peace officer and aggravated battery to a correctional officer.

Effingham County State's Attorney Aaron Jones stated, "My office would like to thank Officer Ashley Ruholl of the Altamont Police Department and Effingham County Animal Control for working so quickly and diligently in building the evidence in this case, as well as Officers Trey Dasenbrock and Zach Bloemker with the Effingham Police Department for providing valuable testimony at the sentencing hearing.”
