Newton Man Arrested on Murder Charges

A Newton man has been arrested on charges of first degree murder.

30-year-old Paul S. Schoonover has been charged with five counts of first degree murder and two counts of aggravated battery. He is being held in Jasper County Jail awaiting a bond hearing.

On June 8, Illinois State Police Division of Criminal Investigation was requested by Newton Police Department to conduct a homicide investigation. 59-year-old Terry L. Eastep of Newton, was located with life-threatening injuries in a residence in the 100 block of Marion Street in Newton. On June 11, Eastep died as a result of the injuries.

State Police DCI was assisted by the Newton Police Department, Jasper County Sheriff's Office, and Illinois State Police Crime Scene Services.
